They Appeared Out of Nowhere: A True Story

I was in my early 20s. My sister was driving us both to church after an ice storm in Minnesota that left the roads as slippery as ice skating rinks! We were out on a country road when up ahead we saw a car stopped with its left turn blinker on at a three-way intersection. My sister pressed her foot against the brake to begin slowing down and nothing happened. She pushed her pedal to the floor. The brake had absolutely no effect on the ice-covered road.

I remember we both looked at each other, knowing she was hydroplaning and about to crash, but at the last minute she steered her car into the ice-covered snow ditch beside the road. She was stuck.

The car at the intersection finally turned slowly left after the oncoming car drove slowly past.

I got out of the car, my church shoes crunching through the layer of ice and sinking into the snow beneath. We were in the ditch beside the 3 way intersection where the left side road met the main road we’d been on. I could see far in all three ways.

My sister tried to back out the car, but her wheels just spun uselessly. Back then we didn’t have cell phones so I stood beside the road and watched for any vehicles in order to wave someone, anyone down but the roads were completely bare. I turned and looked back to my sister for a second and saw that she was still in the exact same spot, and then I looked back to the road.

Impossible! There was a Utility Truck stopped on the side of the road right next to us from the oncoming direction. A second ago there’d been no vehicles even off in the distance. How the heck did that just happen- the truck seemed to have just appeared out of nowhere.

Two smiling big and tall farmer-type looking young men wearing work coveralls and big parka Jackets, exited their truck. Both wore trapper hats and both had big cheerful rosy red cheeked smiles on as they surveyed our situation. They looked exactly alike, it was obvious they were twins! If Santa Clause had utility-truck-driving-farmer-type-looking sons, who were twins, they would have looked like these two with their smiling faces!

They came forward and one asked if we wanted help, then strode over to the car, stood in front of it, and began pushing it backwards as my sister’s wheels spun in reverse. After a couple pushes one of the men asked, “Is your emergency brake on?” My sister gasped and apologized realizing that indeed it was on!

Once they’d pushed her out of the ditch we thanked them profusely! I was afraid that if I looked away for a second, that they would vanish into thin air. So I watched them pull away and drive down the road until I lost site of them when they drove over a distant hill.

I got into the car and asked my sister, “Did you ever notice their truck coming?” She also would’ve had a direct line of site from the ditch. No, she hadn’t seen them coming either.

As we drove to church we talked about angels and wondered if those 2 cheery-faced-farmer-type-big boy-men were angels. We laughed about angel stories we’d read about that depicted wavy-haired handsome angels, and here we’d gotten a pair of big and tall identical twins for angels.

Do angels have a sense of humor? I think so- my sister who was driving the car is my identical twin!

  1. My grandchildren had a wreck after Thanksgiving. Their family Tahoe turned over on its side. All four, three teenagers & one child, were safe and strapped in. But they could not get their seat belts undone.

Some strangers came, climbed in the back of the Tahoe, and got my grandchildren out one by one..

Then they just left. My grandchildren did not see where they came from or where they went.

So we all believe they were angels..
